Is there a consensus on which strains are legit and which are BS?

My country is in the middle of legalizing it, so right now many questions are rising, at least to a local level. I’ve heard many users claim things like: * X strain is great, or Y strain is trash, W strain is overrated, Z strain is pure quality, etc.*

To me, as an ocasional user, it’s baffling to see that many users I’ve met don’t know of the existence of other popular strains – as if people just made up cool trippy names to sell at a higher cost.

Is there like an actually consensus on which types of weed are legit and which are BS made up names?

If not, is there an ongoing effort to unify terms/types and such? Like having an organization or something which legitimately focus on study, uses, clasifications and so on…
