Hey all. I apologize if this is a dumb question, but I couldn’t find a real answer elsewhere. I know it’s possible to be allergic to cannabis itself, but my question is if it’s possible to be allergic ONLY to specific strains rather than the plant as a whole.
Context: Recently, I bought weed from a dispensary in a medically legal state. It was good weed, but I noticed shortly after using it that I developed a sore throat. Specifically, my throat felt swollen (not to the extent that I had trouble breathing, just mild discomfort) and it almost felt as though I had a really bad, irritating nasal drip in the back of my throat, like something you would experience during a sinus infection. It was not all that bad, maybe a 2/10 on a scale of pain, but it was noticeable.
I figured I was getting sick, made a mental note to get COVID tested, and went about my day. Later that day, I realized my throat no longer felt sore. Great! Then I used the same weed as before before bed that night, and I felt my sore throat return. The next morning, it was gone again. I took a few hits from a friend’s dab pen during the day, which was a different strain, and no irritation. But later in the evening my sore throat returned. I unfortunately don’t remember if this was after using more of the original weed or not, so I can’t say for sure if these things are related.
Today I’m going to avoid that weed altogether and see if it makes a difference, since I’m not sure if it is the cause or not. Currently, no sore throat. But I’d like to hear some opinions on whether it’s even possible to be allergic to a singular strain or not to help me either rule this out or look into it further.
